Glasgow’s forward-looking data reflecting the UN Climate Change Conference occupancy boost

As the UN Climate Change Conference (1-12 November 2021) approaches, Glasgow’s hotel occupancy on the books continues to rise.

In a previous article, we showed how key events were causing future demand spikes even when there was less optimism around travel earlier this year. Fast forward to today and there is greater sentiment around these types of events as vaccination rates have increased globally and restrictions on travel have been eased.

UN Climate Change Conference

Glasgow’s future hotel demand is trending between 80.6% and 89.6% for the event period. The days before and after the conference are also showing much improved occupancy levels at 87.1% and 74.5% on 31 October and 13 November, respectively.

While looking at different segments of the markets, all hotels classes show an impact during the conference week with occupancies above 85%. Among those classes, Midscale & Economy Class occupancy on the books is currently 99% for the first day of the conference. Luxury & Upper Upscale hotels show their highest level for occupancy on the books (94%) on 2 November.

Capturing the conference overflow due to its proximity, Edinburgh’s occupancy on the books sits at 53.1% for the first day of the conference. For the rest of the conference week, the market shows levels above 36.3%. Edinburgh’s occupancy on the books during the conference is of course higher than the same time last year.

Conclusion

These numbers indicate the optimism around vaccine distribution, better control of the pandemic, and improved conditions for travel and events. STR’s forward-looking data reflects that optimism with visible market-level spikes around this major event.
